70 Mile Roadtrip

09/21/15

It has become a tradition between my best friend & I to take a road trip every year for her birthday. As it was her 19th birthday this year she chose to spend it at her cabin in 70 mile. I have grown to love land of lakes, as it is often referred to as for you cannot go 5 km without stumbling upon another body of water.

We started the road trip off with a quick stop at Alexandra's Bridge just past Hell's Gate, outside of Hope. This is generally always our first stop on our road trip because nothing beats the view of walking over the Fraser River. After exploring the surrounding area we continued our way through various small towns before reaching 70 Mile. 70 Mile is a historic community, started as an early trading post for those in search of gold during the Gold Rush. It is now just a blip on the side of the hwy, but a popular destination for the summer and winter months for many people have cabins along the various lakes in the area.

Our first night was a little wet, but it left a lot of time for much needed relaxation from our busy work lives. We curled up on the coach and popped in an old VHS, of course a Disney movie. The next day we hit the logging roads in search of some sort of excitement. This time of year the deer are as common as bunnies and we came across plenty. Brigitta's Blue Tick Coon Hound reminded us of their presence with his distinct howl. What a hound dog. After a solid day of exploring the backcountry roads we called it a day & headed back to the cabin.

The following day was filled with a trip to 100 Mile. Respectively 100 Mile House is 30 miles north of 70 Mile and use to also be a trading post. Much larger in size it could almost be called a town, with a greater year round population of residents. We headed to the information center to get suggestions on where to explore and were recommended to check out Camin Lake Falls & the 108 Mile Heritage House. 108 Mile House Heritage Site was located along the hwy backing a large lake. It featured several different themed buildings from the 1880s that had been restored & filled with old artifacts from the era. It was neat to really see how people would have lived during the time & some of the farm equipment they would have used. The simplicity of the lifestyle intrigued me & made me feel as if I was born in the wrong era.

Camin Lake Falls had to have been my favorite attraction of the whole trip. It was a short & easy hike to the first view of the falls; little did we expect to be standing right on top of them as you continued down the trail. I had never been that close to the edge of a waterfall & it was truly breathtaking. Watching the hundreds of gallons of waterfall over the edge every second was memorizing.

All & all we made the best of our time in 70 Mile House, exploring pretty much everything it had to offer. 70 Mile will always hold a special place in my heart & I cannot wait to explore the scenery this winter.
